.... Fake Briton this morning ? They did an interesting article on fake goods being sold on eBay. Apparently eBay have unwittingly included a link in purchased advertising, that was taking people directly to a sight selling FAKE L'Oreal cosmetics. So if you went on looking for L'Oreal, you were more likely to end up being sent there and possibly buying fake goods, than the real thing.
L'oreal have sued eBay, and its going to cost them millions in costs and compensation to L'Oreal because THEY LOST, even though they didn't know the sight was selling fake goods. Trading Standards are, apparently, taking a good look at what eBay does and doesn't do to try and protect people, and that is why your are not allowed to use terms like "similar to" or "in the style of" any more.
They showcased in the article, a lady who was selling on eBay a bag she'd bought, not used, and put on auction as a "Radley style" bag, which it was, but she was using it as a description term, not saying it was Radley. eBay took the auction down pretty quickly saying she couldn't use those sort of terms anymore. But worse was that a few days later she had a letter from Radleys solicitors starting the process for taking her to court for fraudulent selling. Bless her, she was still upset about it, and it has all been sorted out - but now you know just why sometimes when eBay seems to be being unreasonable about stuff, sometimes there IS a good reason why.
Mind, they are still complete ass holes most of the time
